Being a nurse has its ups and downs, good days and bad and some days....even questioning my career choice. After 25 years in the nursing profession-some days are still exhausting while others exhilarating yet...nursing is in my heart. Not everyone can be a nurse... A nurse has certain qualities like compassion, empathy.... a nurse needs to be detail oriented and decisive with a dash of a warped sense of humor that gets us through the day. We are a special breed. We can go hours without a break (often times-a whole shift), take a beating physically & emotionally, and literally can shoot daggers from our eyes when a co-worker says the Q word. We have hectic schedules, deal with code blues & code browns, loosing favorite patients, work holidays and weekends and contemplate calling in every full moon. Sometimes we come home and feel on top of the world- because we helped save a life (or at-least not take one) or know we have made a difference in someone-else's world. ...
